I Tried Contacting Customer Support
As soon as I realised the website had disappeared, I searched for the customer support information from my order confirmation email.
The phone number was no longer in service.
The support email bounced back.
Even the social media pages linked on the website had disappeared.
It was as if the entire store had never existed.
I Contacted the Real Celebrity’s Team
Out of curiosity, I visited the celebrity’s verified social media account.
There, I found an important announcement.
“Beware of fake merchandise websites pretending to sell our official products.”
The celebrity had never launched the store I used.
The scammers had copied:
- Promotional photos.
- Product images.
- Logos.
- Marketing materials.
Everything had been stolen to make the fake website appear genuine.
The Bank’s Fraud Team Investigated
My bank immediately blocked my payment card and opened a fraud investigation.
The investigator explained that fake online stores often have two goals.
The first is obvious.
Collect payments for products that are never shipped.
The second is even more valuable.
Capture customers’ payment card information for additional fraudulent activity.
The merchandise was only bait.
The Reviews Were Fake Too
I remembered reading hundreds of positive customer reviews before placing my order.
The investigator later explained that scammers often create fake reviews to build trust.
Some reviews used identical wording.
Others showed stock images instead of genuine customer photos.
The impressive reputation I had relied on wasn’t real.
It had been manufactured.
The Countdown Timer Was Another Trick
Looking back, I realised the website constantly displayed messages such as:
“Only 3 items remaining!”
“Sale ends in 9 minutes!”
Those messages created urgency.
Instead of taking time to verify the website, I rushed to complete my purchase before the “sale” supposedly ended.
The pressure wasn’t accidental.
It was part of the scam.
I Wasn’t the Only Victim
While searching online, I discovered discussion forums filled with complaints.
Hundreds of fans described nearly identical experiences.
Some had lost money.
Others never received their merchandise.
Several reported unauthorized card transactions after shopping on the fake website.
The scammers hadn’t targeted only me.
They had targeted an entire fan community.
The Website Was Designed to Disappear
The investigator explained that fraudulent online stores often exist only briefly.
They may operate for days or weeks.
Once enough victims have made purchases, the criminals shut the site down and create another one under a different name.
By the time many customers realise they’ve been scammed, the website is already gone.
An Expensive Lesson
Replacing my payment card was straightforward.
Recovering my trust in unfamiliar online stores took much longer.
One fake shopping website had turned excitement into weeks of fraud monitoring and payment disputes.
The hoodie I thought I was buying never existed.
The only thing I actually purchased was an expensive lesson.
In the final part of this story, I’ll explain how fake celebrity merchandise scams work, reveal the warning signs every online shopper should recognise, and share practical ways to protect yourself before making your next online purchase.
