Someone Pretended to Be My Bank Manager
Disclaimer: This story is fictional but inspired by real bank impersonation scams reported around the world. It is written to educate readers about social engineering attacks and how to recognise fraudulent phone calls.
The Call Came During Working Hours
It was around 11:00 a.m.
I was busy replying to emails when my phone rang.
The caller ID showed an unfamiliar mobile number.
Normally, I ignore unknown calls while I’m working.
For some reason, I answered this one.
That decision almost became very expensive.
He Knew My Name
The man on the other end sounded calm and professional.
Before I even introduced myself, he said:
“Good morning, Mr. Jackson.”
Then he mentioned my full name.
Immediately, I assumed he must be calling from my bank.
After all, who else would know my name?
Looking back, I realise that knowing someone’s name doesn’t prove anything.
Criminals can obtain personal information from many different sources.
He Introduced Himself With Confidence
The caller spoke clearly.
He gave his name.
He claimed to be the Branch Relationship Manager from my bank.
He even mentioned the branch where I had originally opened my account.
Everything sounded convincing.
He wasn’t rushing.
He wasn’t shouting.
He sounded exactly like someone who had spent years working in customer service.
Then He Mentioned My Account
He explained that the bank’s fraud monitoring system had detected unusual activity.
According to him, someone had attempted to access my online banking profile from another location.
He quickly reassured me.
“Don’t worry.”
“We’ve temporarily protected your account.”
Hearing those words gave me a strange sense of relief.
I believed he was calling to help me.
He Sounded Helpful
Unlike many scam calls, he wasn’t aggressive.
He spoke politely.
He asked whether I had recently travelled.
Whether I had made any unusual purchases.
Whether anyone else had access to my banking details.
The questions sounded reasonable.
Professional.
Exactly what I imagined a real bank employee would ask.
Then He Offered to Secure My Account
After listening carefully to my answers, he said:
“To protect your funds, I’ll help you secure your account immediately.”
That sentence sounded reassuring.
If someone believes their money is at risk, they’ll often cooperate with the person offering a solution.
That’s exactly what this caller understood.
Everything Changed With One Request
He told me he needed to verify my identity before removing the supposed security restriction.
Then he asked me to confirm several pieces of information.
At first, the questions seemed harmless.
My date of birth.
My address.
My email.
Then his tone changed slightly.
He asked me to open my banking app while staying on the phone.
That’s when something inside me told me to slow down.
A Small Voice Told Me Something Was Wrong
The conversation still sounded professional.
Nothing obvious suggested it was a scam.
But one thought suddenly entered my mind.
Why hadn’t I called the bank?
The bank had called me.
I had no way of knowing who was really on the other end of the line.
Instead of continuing, I decided to ask him one simple question.
That question completely changed the conversation.
(Continue in Part 2, where I’ll explain the warning signs hidden in the phone call, reveal the trick scammers use to gain your trust, and show how one simple verification exposed the fraud.)
