Security awareness training must be updated to address AI-enhanced phishing specifically.
2.  Deepfake Attacks
AI can now generate convincing fake audio and video of real people. Attackers use deepfake technology to impersonate CEOs, directors, and executives — calling finance staff to authorize urgent wire transfers, or sending fake video messages to manipulate employees. The Business Email Compromise scam has evolved into Business Voice and Video Compromise. What this means for Africa: Several African organizations have already lost significant funds to voice deepfake attacks where criminals impersonated senior executives calling to authorize urgent transfers. Nigerian financial institutions need specific policies and verification procedures that account for the possibility of deepfake impersonation.
3.  AI-Powered Malware
Traditional malware is relatively static — once detected, antivirus tools can block it. AI-powered malware can adapt and modify itself in real time to evade detection, learn from failed attempts, and identify the most effective attack paths through a specific organization's defenses. This makes AI-powered malware significantly harder to detect and remove. What this means for Africa: African organizations that rely primarily on traditional antivirus solutions are increasingly vulnerable to AI-powered malware that is specifically designed to evade signature-based detection. Next-generation endpoint protection with behavioral detection capabilities is now essential.

  • Upgrade security tools — move beyond traditional signature-based antivirus to next-generation solutions with AI-powered behavioral detection
  • Update security awareness training — ensure all staff understand AI-generated phishing and deepfake threats specifically
  • Implement verification procedures for financial transactions — no wire transfer should be authorized based on a phone call or video message alone, regardless of who it appears to be from
  • Invest in AI-powered SIEM — tools like Wazuh with machine learning capabilities provide significantly better threat detection than traditional rule-based systems
  • Adopt Zero Trust security architecture — never trust, always verify — because AI attacks can perfectly mimic legitimate users and communications
  • Engage with AI governance frameworks — as AI regulation develops in Nigeria and globally, organizations that understand AI governance will be better positioned for compliance
  • Build AI cybersecurity skills — invest in training your security team to understand and work with AI-powered security tools
