What is a Penetration Test?

A penetration test — commonly called a pentest — is a simulated cyber attack conducted by certified security professionals against your organization's systems, networks, or applications. The goal is to identify security vulnerabilities that real attackers could exploit, before they actually do.

Unlike a vulnerability scan — which is automated and simply lists potential weaknesses — a penetration test involves human expertise to actively attempt to exploit those weaknesses, just as a real attacker would. This makes it far more comprehensive and valuable.

Black Box Penetration Test

Grey Box Penetration Test

This balances realism with efficiency and is the most commonly used approach for Nigerian organizations. Best for: Most Nigerian banks, fintechs, and businesses — it offers the best balance of realism, depth, and cost-effectiveness.
Web Application Penetration Test
What it involves: Specifically focused on testing web-based applications — online banking portals, fintech platforms, e-commerce sites, and any web application that handles sensitive data. Tests for OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities including SQL injection, cross-site scripting, authentication flaws, and more. Best for: Any Nigerian organization with a customer-facing web application or online portal — especially banks, fintechs, and e-commerce platforms.
Mobile Application Penetration Test
What it involves: Specifically targets mobile banking apps, fintech applications, and any mobile application that processes sensitive data. Tests for insecure data storage, weak authentication, improper session management, and insecure communications. Best for: Nigerian banks and fintechs with mobile banking applications — this is increasingly critical as mobile banking adoption grows across Nigeria.
Network Penetration Test
What it involves: Targets the network infrastructure — routers, switches, firewalls, servers, and all network devices. Tests for misconfigurations, weak credentials, unpatched systems, and lateral movement opportunities that an attacker could exploit. Social Engineering Test
What it involves: Tests the human element of security — simulating phishing emails, phone calls pretending to be IT support or executives, and physical access attempts. This tests whether your staff will fall for the tricks real attackers use. Best for: Organizations that have invested in technical security but want to test whether their staff training is working effectively.

What Happens During a Penetration Test?

A professional penetration test follows a structured methodology with clearly defined phases:

Phase 1 — Planning and Scoping

Before anything begins, the scope of the test is agreed upon in writing. This defines exactly which systems will be tested, what testing methods are permitted, the testing timeframe, and how findings will be reported. A formal Rules of Engagement document is signed by both parties.

Phase 2 — Reconnaissance

The penetration tester gathers as much information as possible about the target systems — IP addresses, domain names, employee information, technology stack, and potential entry points — without directly attacking anything yet.

Phase 3 — Scanning and Enumeration

Using specialized tools, the tester actively scans the target systems to identify open ports, running services, operating systems, and potential vulnerabilities. This creates a detailed map of the attack surface.

Phase 4 — Exploitation

The tester attempts to actively exploit the vulnerabilities discovered — gaining unauthorized access, escalating privileges, moving laterally through the network, and accessing sensitive data. Every successful exploitation is carefully documented with evidence.

Phase 5 — Post-Exploitation

Once access is gained, the tester determines how far they can move within the system, what data they can access, and what the real-world impact of the compromise would be. This phase demonstrates the true business impact of each vulnerability.

Phase 6 — Reporting

The most critical phase — the tester produces a comprehensive report documenting every vulnerability found, evidence of exploitation, the risk level of each finding, and specific, actionable recommendations for remediation. A good pentest report is the document that drives your security improvement.
